Project managers, especially in government or defense contracting, use a Contract Line Item Number (CLIN/SLIN) log for several important reasons:

• Does the Contract Line Register need to be set up before the WBS Register? Yes. The WBS Register references the Contract Line Register for dropdown values, so the Contract Line Register must be created first. If it doesn't exist, those dropdowns on the WBS Register will appear blank.

• Can the Contract Line Register be copied from one project to another? Yes. Enable "Include in Copy Project" on the register so users can carry contract line content across projects without re-entering it manually.

• Why is the Parent ID field blank when I first open the register? Parent ID is a reference dropdown that pulls from existing register records. It will remain blank until at least one Contract Line record has been saved.

• What contract types are supported out of the box? The Contract Type dropdown is prepopulated with a comprehensive list including FFP, T&M, CPFF, CPAF, CPIF, and many others. Admins can modify existing values or add new ones as needed.

• What CLIN segment options are available? Three segments are available by default: CLIN, SLIN (Sub-Line Item), and ELIN (Exhibit Line Item Number). Admins can modify these as needed.

• How does the Contract Line Register connect to the WBS Register? When WBS records are linked to Contract Line records, budget adjustments flow automatically between the two. Changes to Distributed Budget on the CLIN side are offset by equal and opposite changes to Undistributed Budget — and vice versa — keeping budgets in balance without manual intervention.

• What happens to CLIN budget values when a WBS budget increases? The linked CLIN's Distributed Budget increases by the same amount that its Undistributed Budget decreases. The delta is equal in both directions.

• What happens to CLIN budget values when a WBS budget decreases? The linked CLIN's Distributed Budget decreases by the same amount that its Undistributed Budget increases. The delta is equal in both directions.

• Is the Contract Line Register required for EVM? Yes. The Contract Line Register is required to use Earned Value Management. Both admins and end users should be aware of this dependency before setting up the project.
